A headset port on a telephone will normally be on the left or right hand side of the telephone.  They can be   2.5mm or 3.5mm round headset ports or rectangular like a telephone jack – if you can’t tell refer to our article How to choose the right cord for your headset? You need to know to get the correct cord to connect either a wired or wireless headset.  One each headset we list what type of cord you need for 2.5,mm, 3.5mm or RJ headset ports.

If your phone doesn’t have a headset port, you can still connect a headset by using an RJ (rectangular telephone plug) headset cord and a headset.  You simply unplug the curly cord of the handset and plug in the headset.  If you want a choice to answer your phone with either the handset or a headset you can use an amplifier or a headset & handset switch.  These are listed as accessories to your headset of choice.

Do you want a wireless headset or wired headset?

A wireless phone headset allows you to walk around and talk up to 120m away from your desk.  It is useful for people who need to multitask.  However, you can’t answer when you are away from your desk. Look at wireless headsets here.

A wired phone headset is good for people who are primarily sitting at their desk for the majority of their work day.  If you are on the telephone for over 1.5 hours per day or take more than 10-15 calls a day, you should use a headset to prevent neck and back injuries and strain.  Look at wired headset here.

Do you want remote answering – being able to answer and hang up a call away from your desk?

Remote answering only applies to a wireless headset.  This means you CAN answer a call while away from your desk.  To get remote answering with your headset you either need an extra cable or a handset lifter.  The cable is called an EHS cable or electronic hook switch cable.  Jabra and Plantronics manufacture these for the most common types of telephones.  Such as Avaya, Alcatel Lucent, Polycom, Panasonic, Yealink, SNOM, Aastra, NEC, Nortel, Toshiba, Mitel. You need to check your phone type call us to do this.  Free call in NZ 0508 222 553.  The handset lifter lifts the handset up when you press a button on your headset to answer the call.  When you press the button on your wireless headset to hang up the call, the handset lifter goes down.  It is a simple mechanical arm attached to the telephone.
